NASSAU, The Bahamas -- The Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources, on Wednesday, hosted the media to a bus tour of its initiatives, and announced the progress of its much-anticipated 'Golden Yoke' Program.
Prior to making the announcement, Minister of Agriculture and Marine Resources, the Hon. Jomo Campbell, led a delegation of senior government officials from the Ministry and members of the media on a five-hour tour of several agricultural projects currently being undertaken.
First up was a visit to D.W. Davis Junior High School to see the progress of a mini chicken farm at the school, which had received a donation of 30 egg-laying chickens. Four schools on New Providence are participating in such a program, which will receive funding support. It's anticipated that the program will be expanded to the Family Islands, also.
The delegation travelled to D & T Farms on Gladstone Road to view a public-private partnership farm which currently houses 2,000 egg-laying chickens providing over 70 dozen eggs on a daily basis. The farm also houses a piggery.
The team then viewed a site that currently houses 10,OOO chicks that arrived in-country on Thursday. They will be part of the 'Golden Yoke' Program. The program is being overseen by Justin Taylor, poultry scientist and expert in the field of chicken farming. At the same site, there are currently 1,000 layers already providing eggs for general consumption.
Finally, the delegation paid a visit to the newly proposed site for the 'Golden Yoke' program: BAIC General Manager Troy Sampson said that it is anticipated that approximately 20,000 eggs will be available for local consumption once the program gets underway.
Minister Campbell said he is optimistic about the future of agriculture in the country; and added, there is so much more to come as the government positions the country where it can meet its objective of food sustainability.
