The National Museum of the Bahamas , Antiquities, Monuments and Museum Corporation( AMMC) is a quasi-government agency that celebrated its seventh year having begun operations on 1 July, 1999. The corporation, legislated by Antiquities, Monuments and Museum Act 1998 and Regulations 1999, is the nation's principal heritage conservation and preservation agency. The management control and administration of the National Museum is vested in the Antiquities, Monuments and Museum Board of 12 members, presently chaired by Mr. Owen S. M. Bethel. The Director of the corporation since its inception is Dr. Keith L. Tinker.

Long Island Museum

Hours: Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Saturday 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

The San Salvador Museum

The San Salvador Museumwas originally opened in 1992 as one of the projects to mark the quincentennial anniversary of the Landfall of Christopher Columbus on the island of San Salvador in The Bahamas. The museum was at that time located in the old court house and jail in Cockburn Town and although very small, it accommodated exhibits depicting the history of the Lucayan and European encounters. The Gerace Research Centre located on the island has been responsible for hosting many archaeologist and students who have participated in excavations of sites throughout the island. Artifacts from these excavations were also displayed in the museum along with a wide selection of local craft and implements.

Due to structural instability the Museum was relocated to the site of the old primary school in Cockburn town. Several devastating hurricanes have caused some damage to the buildings that are now being restored to house the soon-to-be reopened San Salvador Museum.
