The Antiquities, Monuments & Museums Corporation (AMMC) is marking its 25th anniversary with a series of special events throughout October, celebrating its role in preserving and promoting Bahamian heritage.
The month-long celebration will highlight the organization’s contributions over the past quarter-century, recognizing employees, historic milestones, and future initiatives.
Kicking off the “Antiquities Month” celebrations on October 7, 2024, is the launch of a docu-series showcasing historic buildings and sites across The Bahamas. The series aims to raise public awareness about the historical significance of these locations, many of which are underappreciated or not well-known in the community.
On October 21, 2024, a grand parade and re-enactment, in collaboration with The Royal Bahamas Defense Force, will take place on Bay Street. This event will feature demonstrations of morning colors and various drills.
A “Mix and Mingle” event will be held on October 25, 2024, offering the public a chance to learn more about the AMMC, meet AMMC employees, and celebrate with the corporation.
The celebrations will conclude on October 28, 2024 with the strategic return from Michigan State University of Lucayan artifacts that left The Bahamas in the 1920s. This historic event marks the first time ancestral remains have been returned to The Bahamas, symbolizing the AMMC’s growth and international influence.
The AMMC’s 25th Anniversary events are designed to both reflect on its achievements in preserving The Bahamas' cultural heritage, and engage the public in its ongoing mission.
“We are interested in ensuring that we protect the patrimony of this country, both the tangible and intangible heritage, that we have been so lucky to have the ability to protect for the years that we’ve been around,” AMMC Acting Director Don Cornish said.
