FREEPORT, Grand Bahama, The Bahamas -- Minister for Grand Bahama, the Hon. Ginger Moxey says the Salvation Army’s work is unquestionable and she thanked the Christian-based organization for its unwavering commitment to making Grand Bahama a stronger and more compassionate place.

Minister Moxey was one of the speakers expressing thanks and gratitude to the Salvation Army during the organization’s 40th anniversary celebrations on Friday, March 14, 2025 at Freeport Bible Church. The event also served as an appreciation party for Majors Hendrik & Eugenia Sumter, the husband and wife leaders for the Salvation Army in Freeport.

“For four decades, the Salvation Army has been a staple of our community; a source of hope and strength for those in need, providing food, shelter and support to the most vulnerable among us,” said Minister Moxey. “The Salvation Army has stood firm and served with humility, kindness and compassion through hurricanes and hardships.

“I join well-wishers to honor the dedicated staff, volunteers and supporters of this wonderful organization. I also thank Majors Hendrik and Eugenia Sumter for their years of unwavering service and demonstration of God’s amazing love to the people of Grand Bahama. I extend my deepest gratitude on behalf of the Government of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas and the people of Grand Bahama.”

During the anniversary celebrations, there were video highlights of individuals from throughout Grand Bahama who spoke of how much the Salvation Army has assisted them during their times of need. Minister Moxey said that even as the night reminisced on the history of the Salvation Army in Grand Bahama, there was no denying that the presence of the historic organization has made such an invaluable contribution to the development of the Grand Bahamian community.

She referred to the Salvation Army as a steadfast partner dedicated to service and meeting the basic needs of residents throughout the island.

“This organization has been a voice for the downtrodden, a place of refuge and hope for those in despair,” said Minister Moxey. “During tough times, in the aftermath of Hurricanes – and we’ve had many of those – the Salvation Army has been there, providing feeder programs, care for seniors and comfort and support for individuals and families in need of a helping hand. And while serving our community, Majors Hendrik & Eugenia Sumter, the officers, staff and volunteers have always demonstrated love, compassion and kindness to those who needed it the most.

“Because of their dedication, countless lives have been impacted and many residents have seen better days. So, as we look to the future with confidence, knowing that the Salvation Army will continue to be a beacon of light to the community, I extend my deepest appreciation to you on behalf of the Government of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas.  And of course, on behalf of our Prime Minister, the Hon.
