NASSAU, The Bahamas -- Mrs. Ann Marie Davis of the Office of the Spouse of the Prime Minister spoke to the young ladies attending S.T.R.A.W. Inc. Center for Young Women’s 19th Annual Girls Leadership Conference on this year’s theme 'The Situation Room - Lean In' at Breezes Resort, Friday, March 21, 2025.

Mrs. Davis explained that a “situation room” is a term that refers to a place where leaders gather to assess the state of things and make critical decisions.

“It is a command center. A space where problems are faced head-on and solutions are crafted through strategic thinking and teamwork.

“Today, we are all in a situation room. Young ladies, today, you are being called to step into your own personal Situation Room. To gather your thoughts, to evaluate your goals, and make purposeful decisions about your future. Do not be shy.  You are being encouraged to lean in.  Be free! Actively engage in your own growth and development.  Take charge of your life with courage, confidence, and intention.”

She noted that S.T.R.A.W. Inc. has provided hundreds of young women across New Providence and the Family Islands with invaluable opportunities to grow, develop life skills, and sharpen their leadership abilities.

“So, this conference today continues to be a source of empowerment, encouraging you to expand your minds, build your confidence, and elevate your self-esteem. Please do not take this opportunity today lightly!”

Mrs. Davis said the conference is giving them the tools to unlock their full potential. “You will have the opportunity to strengthen essential skills like leadership, teamwork, goal-setting, and maintaining a positive attitude. These are skills that will not only help you excel in school but will also prepare you to thrive in the wider world.”

She encouraged them to make the most of the workshops. “Listen to what you are being told, ask questions, share your thoughts, and most importantly, support each other. Recognize that the young women sitting beside you are not your competition but they are your allies. As you build yourselves up, also build each other up. When you see someone struggling, reach out a helping hand. When you see someone shining, celebrate her success.”

Mrs. Davis told the young ladies that leaning in also means taking initiative and stepping up as leaders, and it is important to remember that true leadership is about service. “It is about having a vision and inspiring others. As young women, you are capable of incredible things. Your voices matter. Your ideas matter. And your dreams matter.”

She added, “When you lean in, you are acknowledging your own worth. You are saying to the world, “I am here! I have something valuable to contribute! I am prepared to do the work necessary to achieve my goals!” And when you combine that determination with kindness and integrity, there is nothing you cannot accomplish.”

Mrs. Davis also commended the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Organization, Therena Cunningham and her team for their dedication to empowering young women across The Bahamas.

Mrs. Davis also presented the organization with a monetary donation from her Office to aid in its work.
