NASSAU, The Bahamas -- Emma Sweeting, a student of Queen’s College had the Best Overall Performance in the 2024 Bahamas General Certificate of Secondary Education (BGCSE) Exam with 12As and one B.

There was a four-way tie for the Best Overall Bahamas Performance in the 2024 Bahamas Junior Certificate (BJC) Exam with each of the students receiving 10As.

Wes Underwood, a student of Samuel Guy Pinder All-Age School in Spanish Wells, Eleuthera, had the Best Overall Bahamas results in the Bahamas Junior Certificate (BJC) 2024 Exam results with 10As.

The Ministry of Education and Technical & Vocational Training Examination and Assessment Division held the National Awards Ceremony to announce and present awards to the students who had top performances on the exams, February 17, 2025 at William Johnson Auditorium, Church of God Convention Centre.

The theme for the event was, 'Rewarding Excellence in National Examinations'.

Education Minister the Hon. Glenys Hanna-Martin said, “Today, we celebrate more than 300 students in schools throughout this nation who have outstanding results in the national exams 2024.

“Today’s award recipients have obtained eight or more As, or have achieved high grades in various subjects and the best results on the island of the schools they represent."

She said, “I extend a hearty congratulations to the awardees, their parents, their schools and their wider communities.”

The Minster said these students and all who are being celebrated have set an incredibly high standard, which is the product of their individual discipline, hard work, determined focus and effort and perseverance.

She added, “We must also acknowledge the impactful support of parents and the extended village, teachers and wider community of each student.”

The Education Minister explained that research recently commissioned by the MOE through the auspices of the University of The Bahamas has demonstrated the critical role of parental involvement and support to high student outcomes.

She said, “In recognition of this, we have created the Parental Engagement Unit and a Parent Online Portal to facilitate greater parental engagement for student success throughout the public education system.

“Additionally, the Ministry to provide greater support for students as they prepare for national exams has created online tutoring for the review and revision of course material.”

The Minister explained that this will also assist students in better pacing themselves, thereby alleviating some of the anxiety that naturally accompanies this process for many students.

The Education Minister said last year, the Ministry saw what she hopes will become a positive trend of improvement in student performance in the BJC and BGCSE examinations with a significant percentage of students sitting the BGCSE exam.

She noted that there has been an increase in school attendance in excess of 92 per cent, a marked increase in the graduation rates nationally and overall student success rates.

“Our support mechanism of student success academic coaches in 15 schools including primary, junior and senior schools in the public sector, is by all accounts yielding positive outcomes.

The Minister said, “These I hope are promising signs that our combined and collaborative efforts are positioning all of our students for success in our private and public schools.”

Jean Dumene of C.R. Walker Senior High School received the Best Overall Performance in the 2024 BGCSE Examination results in Government Schools with 6As, 4Bs, 2Cs and 2Ds.  What is also notable about Mr. Dumene is that he is in the 11th Grade.
