NASSAU, The Bahamas -- The historical milestone of women voting for the first time was celebrated during National Women’s Week 2024 Empowerment Luncheon held at Breezes Bahamas resort on Tuesday, November 26, 2024. Bahamian women voted for the first time on November 26, 1962.

Minister of Social Services, Information and Broadcasting the Hon. Myles LaRoda pointed out what women have accomplished since then.

He noted that the Hon. Glenys Hanna-Martin is the longest serving female Member of Parliament and the first female chairman of a political party.

The Minister said, “I also wish to highlight that this is the first time that the Speaker of the House of Assembly and President of the Senate, both women, are serving in the same term.

“No doubt, much of these accomplishments could be attributed to the matriarchs of our society -- the forerunners who have laid the foundation for our women to follow.”

Minister LaRoda added that some younger women will seriously consider offering for public office after being inspired at the luncheon.

He said the promotion of women in leadership is one of the areas of focus by the Department of Gender and Family Affairs formerly known as the Women’s Desk.

He explained that the Desk was established in 1981 within the then Ministry of Youth and Sports. “Over the past 43 years, the Department continues to advocate for transformative leaders who have adequately prepared themselves.”

The Minister said, “As we celebrate National Women’s Week, I extend the clarion call for women to pursue leadership positions. Take what is rightfully yours, soar like eagles even in the midst of the odds.”

He said let the theme for the week, ‘Empowered Women: Refined, Reskilled, Resilient and Resolute’ be their mantra.

He said, “There is no limit to what you can do. Mahatma Gandhi said it best, ‘Be the change that you want to see in the world’.”

Spouse of the Prime Minister, Mrs. Ann Marie Davis also spoke at the luncheon.

Mrs. Davis said the theme captures the spirit of what it means to be a woman of purpose, grounded in faith and strengthened by this journey of life.

“Today, we celebrate the capacity of women to rise, adapt, and stand firm in the face of challenges, in the face of the wiles and temptations of the enemy.

“We are reminded of the refining process, much like the purification of gold. Through trials and adversities, God shapes us into vessels of honor. Isaiah 48:10 says, ‘I have refined you, though not as silver; I have tested you in the furnace of affliction.’”

She told those attending the luncheon that each challenge they have endured, every rejection they have received, every betrayal they have experienced, have prepared them for greater purpose and impact.

“But being refined is just the beginning. This journey also calls us to be reskilled.”

Mrs. Davis said, “In today’s ever-changing world, God equips us with the ability to learn and grow. Whether you are acquiring new knowledge, honing your gifts, or rediscovering talents that lay dormant, remember that every skill you possess is a tool for service in His kingdom.

She said, “In everything we do we must still give thanks. Proverbs 31 reminds us of the virtuous woman who works willingly with her hands, providing for her family and serving her community. She is resourceful, and so are you.”

During the luncheon, discussions were held on “Empowering Women… A Mandate” and “Are We Ready for a Female Prime Minister." On the panel were the Minister of Education & Technical & Vocational Training the Hon. Glenys Hanna-Martin; former Member of Parliament, Loretta Butler-Turner; National Vice-Chairperson for the Progressive Liberal Party, Robyn Dawn Lynes; Politician and Businesswoman, Arinthia Komolafe and life-long civil servant, Sharmie Farrington.
