Biography
It is the desire of the Hon. Michael Halkitis to see all young people have access to the ‘quality education’ and ‘economic opportunity’ which have transformed his life. He views education as the force for change, both for the individual and for the country.
A highly-distinguished financial analyst, trader and portfolio manager, Mr. Halkitis has served as a Member of Parliament and Minister of State for Finance from 2012-2017.
Having met the economy in “a wheelchair” in 2012, he is credited with having successfully stabilized and turned the economy around. He digitized the Ministry of Finance and introduced major taxation reforms which have been praised for operating without any glitches.
Mr. Halkitis was elected to parliament for the first time on May 2nd, 2002, as Member of Parliament for the Adelaide Constituency. He was appointed to the Senate in 2007 by the Leader of the Opposition Rt. Hon. Perry G. Christie.
He is a graduate of St. Augustine’s. He began his tertiary career at The College of The Bahamas and later earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from the University of Western Ontario, Canada, in 1991.
Mr. Halkitis is a Financial Analyst, Trader, Portfolio Manager and Private Banker who was employed as a Chartered Financial Analyst at British American Financial.
Mr. Halkitis was sworn in as the Minister of Economic Affairs and Leader of Government Business in the Senate in September 2021, following the September 16, 2021 General Election.
He was born on February 1, 1969 in humble circumstances in Coconut Grove, New Providence and spent his early years in Old Bight, Cat Island.
He is married to Dr. Tracy Roberts-Halkitis. They are the parents of two children, Kiran and Soraya.
