A former Chairman of the College of The Bahamas, Alfred Sears, KC, has played a fundamental role in the transition of the institution into a university.
He is a former Attorney-General and Minister of Education, Science and Technology from 2002-2007, he is a national thought-leader, having published extensively on matters relating to the law and national development.
He is a distinguished lawyer by profession and was a managing partner at Sears & Co.
Mr. Sears received his early education at St. Augustine’s College. He holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and master’s degree in international affairs and international law from Columbia University, a jurist doctor from New York Law School and a certificate in legal education from Norman Manley Law School, Jamaica.
Mr. Sears was a full-time tenured lecturer in international relations and the political economy of Africa and the Caribbean in the Black and Puerto Rican Studies Department at Hunter College of the City University of New York (CUNY) for a decade beginning in 1978.
His administrative experience includes serving as executive director of the Association of Caribbean Studies of City University of New York from 1984 to 1986, coordinator of the third and fourth annual Caribbean/Latin American Conference on Inter-American Affairs Programme of Hunter College and departmental research assistant in Columbia’s University’s African Institute. He also coordinated study-aboard programmes to Africa and the Caribbean for undergraduates from Hunter and Brooklyn colleges in 1979 and 1982.
He has received numerous honors and awards, and has travelled extensively throughout the Caribbean, Europe, Asia, West and Southern Africa.
Among his honors and awards he received a Revson Law Teaching Fellowship at City College of City University of New York, a PSCUNY Faculty Research award from Hunter College of CUNY and the Intra-mural Faculty Development Award from Hunter College.
Mr. Sears has served as the Member of Parliament for Fort Charlotte from 2000-2012. Among his notable achievements in the community: The renovation and establishment of the Fort Charlotte Community Development Center; the re-engineering of the Chippingham Drainage Canal; construction of the $10 million state-of-the-art T.G. Glover Primary School and the successful lobbying for the construction of the new Ardastra Gardens housing subdivision.
He was sworn in as a Minister of Works and Utilities on Monday, September 20, 2021, following his election to the House of Assembly as the Member of Parliament for Fort Charlotte constituency.
He was born on January 13, 1953. He is married to Marion Bethel and is the father of Adelaja, Ife and Nia.
His ministerial portfolio as Minister of Works included: Construction, Maintenance and Upkeep of Public Parks, Infrastructure including Government Buildings, Roads, Docks, Bridges & Cemeteries
On the 11th of September, 2023; Minister Sears’ was appointed Minister for the Ministry of Immigration and National Insurance.
His portfolio includes, Immigration, Emigration, Naturalization, Citizenship, Work and Residency Permits, and matters associated with National Insurance.
