Biography
The Hon. Fred Mitchell has had a distinguished life in the public service as a Member of Parliament, Senator, Minister of Foreign Affairs and/or Public Service and Immigration.
Among his major political achievements are: the fight to integrate Haiti as a member state of CARICOM; successful negotiation of many important international agreements including the Shengen Visa Agreement and the European Partnership Agreement. He was also instrumental in establishing the Bahamian diplomatic mission in Cuba and the Bahamas Embassy in China.
As the Member of Parliament for Fox Hill, he has played a pivotal role in community-building to the extent that his permanent constituency office in Fox Hill is now used as a community centre.
Mr. Mitchell holds degrees from Antioch College, Harvard University and University of Buckingham including a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature, Master’s in Public Administration and Bachelor of Laws. He has also attained Professional Certificates of Calls to both the English and Bahamas Bars.
Mr. Mitchell has also served in many professional, social and political organisations. He is a member of the Bahamas Bar Association, a founding member of the Bahamas Committee on Southern Africa and was an activist in The Bahamas Human Rights Association.
He currently serves as Chairman of the Progressive Liberal Party.
He was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Public Service in September 2021, subsequent to the General Election of September 16, 2021.
On the 11th September, 2023, The Prime Minister of The Commonwealth of The Bahamas reshuffled his cabinet and removed the Department of Public Service from his portfolio. He is now the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
