Glenys Hanna Martin was born in Nassau on October 27th, 1958; the third of five children to the late Hon. Arthur Dion Hanna and Beryl Hanna (nee Church) (both deceased). She is a proud mother of three children and a proud grandmother.

Her education began at St. Anne’s School, Fox Hill. She later attended Queen’s College, and matriculated from Padworth College, School in Reading, England. She continued her studies at York University, Toronto, Canada, graduating in 1981 with a Bachelor of Arts (specialized honours) degree in English Literature. In the same year she joined the public service as an executive officer in the Ministry of Education.

In 1985 she left Nassau to read law at the University of Buckingham, England, where in 1987 she obtained her LL.B. with top honours. having been awarded the Maxwell Law Prize by that institution. She joined the Inner temple, London and in 1988, after having successfully completed her Council of legal education course, was called to the Bar of England and Wales. Later that year she was admitted as an attorney of the Supreme Court of The Bahamas and joined the firm of Arthur D. Hanna & Co.

Mrs. Hanna–Martin, who has a particular interest in education in The Bahamas, was elected president of the New Providence women’s branch of the PLP in 1998 and served with energy and dynamism.

Glenys Hanna-Martin is a four-time member of parliament for the Englerston constituency having first won the seat in the 2002 general election. That same year she was appointed to the Cabinet of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas as Minister of Transport and Aviation. In 2012, when the PLP was again elected to government, she was again appointed Minister of Transport and Aviation.

A political trailblazer, Glenys Hanna-Martin has served as Chair of the Bahamas Branch and immediate past Regional Representative of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Women’s Association.

In 2008, she was elected Chairman of the Progressive Liberal Party, becoming the first female in The Bahamas to hold the Chairman post of any major political party.

She is now the longest serving female Parliamentarian in Bahamian history and as the nation’s first female Minister of Transport and Aviation, she spearheaded a transformational and modernization initiative of the aviation sector.

Mrs. Hanna-Martin was appointed Minister of Education, Technical and Vocational Training in September 2021, shortly after winning her seat in the general election of September 16th, 2021.
