GRAND BAHAMA, The Bahamas – Residents from various communities throughout Grand Bahama are now members of the Ministry of National Security’s National Neighbourhood Watch Council (NNWC) in a bid to strengthen their neighbourhoods and keep them safe.

A graduation ceremony was held on March 14, 2025 at the Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF) Training College for the 33 residents, inclusive of officers from Urban Renewal, who underwent a week-long training.

Minister for Grand Bahama, the Hon. Ginger Moxey was on hand for the graduation and pointed out that their presence demonstrates the power of unity and the collective desire to create a safer environment for everyone.

“We often hear the phrase, it takes a village. Tonight, the village is represented by all of us and Grand Bahama will be a better place to work, live and vacation because of your efforts in forging stronger bonds,” she said.

“We all know that the safety of our community is not just the responsibility of law enforcement, but rather it is a shared responsibility that requires all of us to be informed, engaged and proactive.”

In congratulating the newest members of the NNWC, Minister Moxey stressed that neighbourhood watch groups are a bit more than just keeping an eye out for suspicious activity.

“It encompasses fostering and building relationships in trust. This programme is not just about reducing crime, it is about knowing your neighbours, supporting local businesses, engaging with youth and creating an environment where everyone feels empowered to contribute,” she said.

Minister Moxey also encouraged them to "take everything that you have learned and empower others within your community."

The graduates heard that they are the eyes and ears of the RBPF and were presented with a certificate of completion from the School of Professional Development.

Also in attendance were Gaynell Rolle, Undersecretary in the Ministry of National Security; Assistant Commissioner of Police Advardo Dames, Officer In Charge of the Northern Bahamas; NNWC National Coordinator Chief Superintendent, Dr. Indira Adderley; National Liaison Officer, Chief Superintendent Darvy Pratt; and NNWC Chairman Jason Fitzgerald.
